Dalston Open Studios

Dalston Open Studios

The first stage of the  Dalston Open Studios project was a seminar programme that took place on the 15th - 18th November 2010.  Seminars were attended by students and community organisations from around Hackney and neighbouring boroughs

Over the course of the week professionals working in the Film, Design, Music, Fine Art and Photography industries reflected on their careers to date and offered genuine advice to people that were in the process of planning their future careers.

Dalston Open Studios is the first step to creating a network between local creative businesses and young people. A few of the speakers were so impressed with the young attendees that they offered internships.

You can see what some of the students who attended made of the project by following this link

Dalston Open Studios has already provided a starting point for future apprenticeships, mentoring programmes and work experience placements within the creative industries. We'll be working closely with creative businesses and local education institutes to build on this so wathch this space

Speakers at the Vortex

As with the rest of London, the structure of the economy in East London is changing.  Manufacturing has been on the decline since the 1970’s and we have seen the emergence of new forms of industry.  Hackney is now renowned for its vibrant creative economy.   There are far fewer large employers and there are a higher proportion of jobs in small businesses than the rest of London.   Many of the small businesses in Hackney are successful enterprises that understand that the twenty-first century will depend increasingly on the generation of knowledge through creativity and innovation.

There is diversity in this new creative economy that offers a unique environment for aspirational young people to develop their skills across a range of disciplines.   Whilst Hackney is the fast growing heart of creative activity in London, young people in the area are not finding avenues into the industries that are flourishing on their doorstep. There are barriers that exist between the creative economy and the young people of Hackney and Dalston Open Studios is the first step to overcoming those barriers.

Using Bootstrap’s unique relationship with the creative businesses, this project provides an opportunity for young people in Hackney to see what’s going on behind the closed doors of the creative industries in Dalston.   Read more by downloading the PDF below
