Bootstrap Campus

Bootstrap Campus

In 2010 we launched the 'Dalston Open Studios' project to engage young people and help them plan for the future. In 2013 we launched 'Bootstrap Campus' to build on this success.

Bootstrap is a unique community of over 300 different start up enterprises: Architects, Filmmakers, Charities, Designers, Musicians, Craftsmen and many more who all work alongside each other.

Bootstrap Campus works with local youth organisations, employment services, schools and community groups to engage as many young people as possible.

Work Placements
We are partnering with Create Jobs  to provide 8 week placements for young people.
The financial crisis is hitting young adults the hardest and 'a lack of experience' is the main barrier for young people applying for training, apprenticeships and work.

Workshops
We will be running workshops where young people can work as a team with Bootstrap tenants to deliver projects. For example, '48hr film' project where young people and a film maker shoot, edit and produce a short film in 48hrs to be screened to the public at Dalston Roof Park.

Open Days
Schools and youth organisations are invited to bring groups for a tour of the building and see where tenants work. The tour will include a visit to the Dalston Roof park and a real WW2 bunker.

Students will be able to see where tenants work and quiz them about their career choices. Visits can be tailored to fit e.g. Music, Fashion, Charity, Film, Design, Fine Art etc.

So 2013 promises to be a very exciting year! Please follow us and get in contact to hear more.

Bootstrap Campus Key Points

What’s the Social Need? Youth unemployment. Schools are struggling to prepare young people to be work ready. The younger generation are being hit hardest by the impact of the financial crisis.

What’s the Solution? “Learning through doing’ in the work place. Real life experience for personal development and improve employability skills.

Why is this unique? Bootstrap has a diverse and talented tenant body of over 500 start up businesses. Tenants cover every sector – from the arts to social enterprise and work alongside each other at desks & studio spaces.

What is Bootstrap? Bootstrap Company is a social enterprise, based in Hackney since 1980. Bootstrap supports startup enterprises, runs innovative educational projects and events.

How will it work? Bootstrap Campus will help 16-24 yr old’s transition into work through a blend of open days, workshops, work experience & work placements. The project will focus on improving employability skills to help young people transition into work, training or further education.

What's the Impact? Bootstrap Campus will create new networks for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Lack of experience is a major barrier for young people trying to get into work.

The work place has changed. The modern workplace is flexible, creative and networked. “The jobs that 16-year-olds will be doing in 10 years time haven't been invented yet.”

Our long term vision?

Bootstrap Campus is a stepping stone into work, education, training.

We want to inspire young people with a DIY attitude to their career.

Build a community of Bootstrap graduates who go on to start work at Bootstrap or are helped to start their own enterprise.
